Leopard Geckos

Elijah has some new pets. Leopard Geckos. Their names are Rango and Comet. He loves them so much.

Elijah worked hard at making them the perfect habitat. Doesn’t that look like a great home for Geckos?

Rango spends a lot of his time in the tube.

Comet likes the heat rock.

Comet also likes the heat from the heat lamp.

When we first brought them home Comet didn’t want to eat. A few days later she shed her skin and now she is eating well. We read and found out that sometimes they won’t eat when they are about to shed. Elijah feeds them meal worms.

Rango likes to eat.   Elijah takes each gecko out one at a time and places them in a smaller container to eat so he will know who ate and who didn’t. If one doesn’t eat very well he will offer that one more food in the evening.

I don’t know who is who in the pictures below. I can tell them apart if they are side by side, but if I look at only one of them I have no idea who it is. Elijah knows who is who from a glance.

We are enjoying learning about Leopard Geckos and I plan to do a unit study on Geckos soon.

Our Taco

We added a new baby to our house this week. His name is Taco and he is a chiweenie. He has the body and nose of a weenie, the legs and head of a Chihuahua and ears of Dumbo. Isn’t he so cute!

Pedro has surprisingly done well with Taco. He has growled a couple of time, but when I’ve said hush he has. They haven’t fought, but I don’t think Pedro loves him.

Taco has taken a liking to Dakota over the rest of us. He follows Dakota all over the house.

Taco reminds me a lot of Jose who passed away this past year with kidney problems. They have almost the same markings, but Jose has tan where Taco has a darker brown.

R.I.P. Cheyenne

DSCF6426 DSCF6425

Elijah’s dog, Cheyenne, was a really good dog. She appeared wild and crazy to anyone who drove up, but she was really a sweet dog.

A week ago we were leaving to take Elijah to choir practice and we ran over Cheyenne in our driveway. It was really sad. Elijah loved his do so much.

We will miss Cheyenne.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Is it a dog or a cat? It’s Pedro our dog sleeping on my desk!

Rocky the Turtle

Meet Rocky our turtle. Elijah got Rocky in September of 2007 as a back to school project. He is still small, but he has grown a lot over the years.

Rocky is very friendly and loves attention. You can see he is coming right up to see what I'm doing.

Rocky lives in our kitchen on this small filing cabinet. Every time someone walks in the kitchen he goes crazy wanting some attention. His tank could probably use some cleaning, but he hasn't complained yet.

He will eat from your hand and iff you snap your fingers he will follow you around.

We buy ReptoMin food at Wal-Mart to feed rocky. It has some little pellets and dried shrimp.

We just dump a little food in and Rocky starts munching down.

Sometimes Elijah takes Rocky outside for a walk.

If you are looking for an easy pet, a turtle might be the pet for you.

Pedro

This is Pedro, our crazy Chihuahua that likes to get his picture made.

We took Pedro to the vet today and he has allergies. It runs in the family! He got an allergy shot that is supposed to last for 3 weeks. Ummm I do not want to have to take him to the vet every month to get an allergy shot! I do hope the poor dog can sleep tonight.

Since he got a shot the kids decided to take him to Pet Co for a prize. He got a new collar.
WAIT! I got a shot on Monday and blood drawn on Tuesday... where's my prize?

The photo was taken by Dakota.

Dogs Dogs Dogs

I don't know what happened to me, I had a moment where I lost my mind and couldn't think straight.

Dakota and I headed to town looking for Elijah an Easter surprise. I really hadn't planned on doing anything like that, but he has been sick and needed cheering up.

We stopped and ate some lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant and there was a sign
FREE PUPPIES.

Back when we got rid of Consuela and her puppies I did tell Elijah that we would get him an outside dog when Spring came. So I called and asked about the puppies.
A German Shepard puppy would make a good outside dog.

We have a new puppy. Her name is Cheyenne.

Elijah really was excited. I think in the first picture he was still in shock.
He loves this dog and she seems to like him too. She follows him everywhere.

Elijah has said "Thank you" I don't know how many times. He was really shocked we got him a dog.

Cheyenne is gonna be big!

While I'm posting about dogs, I might as well include our two other spoilt rats.
This is Pedro. He is so spoiled and thinks I'm his mama. He is jealous of the kids and other dogs.
We have had Pedro for 3 years now.
He is a tough dog and was attacked by werewolves... I mean coyotes, this past November.
(The werewolf part was added in especially for Juliann :)
He had big holes on each side of his front shoulders. The vet was able to fix him up and he healed up nicely.

Jose is Pedro's son. He was born this past November. You can just look at him and tell he is spoiled. This is Dakota's dog. I purposely did not have anything to do with this dog so he would bond with Dakota. It worked. He won't even come to me. He loves Dakota and cries for him.

Here are the three dogs walking around in the yard. So far they have all gotten along fine.
Pedro watches me though, if I say anything to the new dog Pedro has to come remind me that I'm his mama.

So now we have three dogs. What was I thinking?
I am glad Elijah has his own dog now. He loves her so much.

Pet Snake

Elijah begs for a pet snake. We have not had luck with pet snakes in the past. We can't keep em alive.
One day our outside dog was barking like crazy at this snake so Elijah grabbed him up and claimed him as a pet. He had to come inside to get dressed for town and the snake got away.
Elijah was so sad, but he was a very happy owner of a snake for a short while.

Turtle Eggs!

We had a surprise yesterday morning to find eggs in the box turtle's terrarium. WOW! Didn't expect that. Elijah has had this turtle just over a month.

Elijah was very excited. I told him I didn't think they would hatch, but after googgling, I'm thinking there is a chance. I guess time will tell. Oh it will be a long wait, any where from 50 - 100 days! This kid is going to drive me crazy waiting on that.

This is the turtle who likes to eat legs off the frogs in Elijah's story below.

Guess what we are studying about now?

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Elijah wrote a frog story.

Dakota said "Elijah is demonic", after reading this story. I laughed so hard after reading this, you never know what Elijah is going to come up with.

Elijah wrote this story in Literacy Clinic at ULM.

Poor Frogs!
By Elijah Miller
Every frog in my backyard should be very careful around my pet turtles. Any time a frog does hop by my turtles, the turtles think, "if only I could move faster... I would catch those frogs again!"

I think that these turtles are always waiting for the frogs to fall asleep because they have bitten off their little green legs before! The turtles say, "frog legs are the best!"

I thought about giving my pet turtles more food to eat, but don't you think it is fun to wait and see which frog has been chewed on?

Ask my brother, he will tell you that we both like to check out which frogs have been snacked on every day after we get up.

If only frogs could fly! I should buy them a toy airplane to escape in. Those mean turtles should give the poor frogs a break!
The End
Is that a hoot or what!
